Hangzhou is the capital of the Zhejiang province. It is the cultural, economic and political hub of the province and is also one of the most enjoyable and popular tourist destinations in all of China. The city is located on the Qiantang River, in the southeastern portion of the country. Hangzhou experiences all four seasons and its’ weather is mild and steady throughout the year. This means that any time is a good time to visit the area as it relates to climate.
Perhaps, the most popular landmark in all of Hangzhou is the West Lake. It is well known for its’ beauty, which naturally supports and enhances the other historically and culturally significant sites. In the West Lake area, the Six Harmonies Pagoda, Solitary Hill, Ling Yin Temple and the Mausoleum of General Yui Fei are all high trafficked destinations. Ten West Lake Prospects also allows tourists and the locals panoramic and breath taking views of the lake, various monuments, as well as the mountains.
Hangzhou is also home to some very nice museums that highlight and showcase the culture of China. Some prominent ones; include the Tea Museum and the National Silk Museum.
Hangzhou is also well known for its’ culinary expertise. Renown for its’elaborate and sophisticated dishes, some stand outs include a chicken dish that is cooked in clay (Beggar’s Chicken), West Lake fish in sweet and sour sauce, braised pork and fried shrimp with Longjiang tea.
There are also plenty of opportunities to shop in Hangzhou. Qing He Fang Street is a popular shopping venue. It is one of the most well known streets in Hangzhou and is reflective of the Southern Song Dynasty. Qing He Fang street also provides a wide range of shopping options, including tea, silk, and unique fans.
The nightlife in Hagzhou is also jumping. Tea houses and pubs are aplenty and highly trafficked. Today, Hagzhou is a good mix of both the modern and the historic. The West Lake provides beautiful, natural settings. It is also an important economic hub for the country. The Chinese have a saying regarding the city of Hagzhou, “Above is Heaven, below is Hangzhou.” The natives recognize the beauty of the city and many tourists have as well. In fact, Hangzhou is one of China’s most important tourist stops.
